Hong Kong architect and technophile Gary Chang has the most amazing apartment. His 344-square-foot space can be shifted into at least 24 different layouts, using a funhouse’s worth of sliding walls and detachable shelving. |
 |
Chang has lived in this apartment since he was 14, moving in with his parents and three younger sisters. Back then, he used to sleep in the hallway. Now, he uses a hydraulic Murphy bed that he designed himself, which is usually hidden behind a sofa during the day. Turning his apartment into what he’s named a “Domestic Transformer” hasn’t been cheap. It only cost $45,000 to buy, but his latest design efforts came with a $218,000 price tag. |
 |
“using shifting wall units suspended from steel tracks bolted into the ceiling, the apartment becomes all manner of spaces — kitchen, library, laundry room, dressing room, a lounge with a hammock, an enclosed dining area and a wet bar.” (nytimes.com) |
his apartment is decorated with alessi dishes, arne jacobsen cutlery, or what mr. chang calls an “altar of muji accessories”. quotation from interactivearchitecture.org: “ultimate spatial flexibility is created through the multiple operations of the partitions. lighting. and mobile furniture. all the mundane necessities of bachelor life – books. cds. clothing, pictures. stereo, videos are stacked on a chrome factory shelving system and hidden discreetly behind floating white curtains. the central space becomes the actual space for living, working, eating, sleeping, chatting, dressing and reading. blue fluorescent tubes are carefully placed to wash the floor with an unearthly glow, while bright up-lighting articulates structural members. the main aperture of the front window offers views to the world beyond whether the actual view out of the window, or through the large scale movie screen to the fantasy world of hollywood, the real world of news, or the electronic world of internet.” and his own arguement for staying there instead of moving into a bigger apartment: “but why do that? i see my place as an ongoing experiment.” |

Fuquan Junze Furniture Collection
Sunday, October 31, 2010
This new furniture works collection is designed by Hongkong based design studio, Oil Monkey with their main designer Fuquan Junze. The furniture collection was done in clean and simple way using creative mixture of materials like plastic, oak, wood and stainless steel.
OilMonkeyology:
“The definition of a query has a greater ponder value compared to the query itself, it is because we often neglect what we are actually pondering about, and what needs are we actually asking for. The design should not be purely existed only for the sense of aesthetic, its existence also coheres with its own significance and individual theory; these components are being mutually diverted to generate the indivisible relationship.”
The Perspective shelf is designed on the basis of the principles of perspective drawing and made of oak.

Creative Café Design Inspired by a Library in New York
Wednesday, October 20, 2010This amazing interior design idea comes from Nema Workshop and belongs to a small Espresso Café located on Madison Avenue, in New York City. The idea was to create a strong identity for the bar that would immediately stand out and be easily recognized. Here is more information from the architects: “Inspired by the nearby Bryant Park Library, Nema Workshop designed a store that is straightforward in a simple twisted way – take a library and turn it SIDEWAYS. The booklined shelves become the floor and ceilings and wood floor ends up on the walls meanwhile the pendants protrude sideways from the wall. To achieve the books shelves on the floor, the space is lined with sepia-toned full size photograph of books printed on custom tiles.” We consider this idea to be bold, original and highly inspirational, but we have to say we would have liked this unusual café better if those library prints were real books- well, the ones on the walls at least.

Jul 16 2010 Modern Dream Homes : Villa Potsdam/Kleinmachnow by BERLINRODEO
Tuesday, October 5, 2010
No one ever wants to revisit their high school days, but if you never got to sit with the cool kids at lunch – your chance just arrived. BERLINRODEO stepped in and just made room for you at their table.
With their “interiors for brave souls”, and even bolder design philosophy – this studio is not afraid to push a few boundaries, creating some pretty awesome and unique interiors. Private residence Villa Potsdam/Kleinmachnow demonstrates this talent and shows off how a typically conceptualized rustic villa can have some modern love.
The neutral palette and clean lines are accented by wild animal rugs and fancy chandeliers, all making you curious to see what is in the next room. The open interior provides a loft-like character, but still allows for enough private space on the upper floor to include guestrooms and three baths. If you are lucky enough to sneak down to the basement, you’ll find the fitness room and dip tank that await you!
Decorate Your Balcony For The Summer
Saturday, October 2, 2010Pool-party season is around the corner and everyone with a backyard is gearing up for the festivities. Now just because you live in an apartment building, doesn’t mean you can’t turn your balcony space into an area that’s style and social friendly!
Here are a few tips to get you started..
• Remember to ask the management about weight limits or any regulations they have about redecorating the balcony. You have to know these things if you’re going to be successful in turning your “outdoors” into a safe and inviting area.
• Take careful measurements so that you don’t have to waste time or money returning things that don’t fit correctly.
• Take into consideration what the weather might bring: extreme sun exposure or harsh rain. Look into some kind of protection; such as an awning or a large umbrella or parasol.
• Draw out some sketches of potential design ideas so that you can truly see what looks best in your space.
• Go online to look at furniture, accent pieces, or flooring since it saves time.
• Make sure your space is inviting to others. Stay away from overly fancy items because you want people to feel at home.
• Don’t clutter the space. It should be free-flowing and easy to move around on.
• Adding plants or a small fountain always adds to creating a more soothing and relaxed ambiance.

Superhero Lifestyle: The House of Iron Man
Wednesday, May 19, 2010Iron Man 2 continues the adventures of billionaire Tony Stark and his superhero alter ego Iron Man. The main character is played by Robert Downey Jr. and the whole movie features amazing effects and state-of-the-art technology. But the home of the character is by far the most interesting aspect of the movie- from our point of view at least. This may come as a huge disappointment to some of our readers, but what you see in the photos below is digitized fiction. Jon Favreau, the director of the film explains that the home was falsely positioned on a site in Malibu. It is forbidden to build an architecture project there, so they came up with a different solution: computer graphics. The interiors were built on a sound-stage area in Los Angeles and everything was synchronized with the computer plans. When I’ve saw the movie the house was so real but it seems that movies can trick us very easily ..like this one did. -viaHome-Designing
Cool Bathroom Shelf and Towel Hanger, Milan 2010
Thursday, April 22, 2010As we already stated, Milan Furniture Fair was full of ideas that we so eagerly captured. Here is a really cool alternative for a bathroom mirror. Occupying the same amount of space, but with a lot more functionality, this bathroom shelf can also become a towel or clothes hanger when needed. So simple and yet with a daring practicability, the hanger also features a mirror and a storage place for perfumes and other small accessories. Its white finish makes it perfect for any modern bathroom, big or small. Still, we think a smaller version would have even more success. What do you think of this design? Do you find it to be practical or a bit exaggerated ?

Large Patio Umbrellas :: Tropical Paradise (Octagonal)
Wednesday, March 10, 2010Tropical Paradise (Octagonal)
Our Tropical Paradise umbrella was inspired by the many scenic paradise spots located on the beautiful southern beaches of Thailand. This particular scene captures one of those spots in a dazzling array of summer colors. Use this magnificent hand-painted umbrella to create a tropical look in any outdoor setting. The bottom of the shade is painted with the same tropical design so you can see a touch of paradise from any angle!
